The following is an excerpt from an email newsletter I received from Prof. Kimball:
Carl Sagan comes out and suggests that extraordinary claims require extraordinary proof and all of the sudden that becomes the bible for science. It also happens to be the worst discovery protocol imaginable…a really dumb idea. Science hides its head in the sand when it comes to spiritual matters, though spiritual phenomenon are prevalent everywhere you look.
What is worse is that in some cases whole churches are based on an idea someone thought was important. I think of the “Rapture” groups of today. No where in history was this a doctrine of a church until William Miller and John Darby made it an issue in the 1840’s. The judgment of men will not be accomplished by being raised from the earth just prior to a fiery cataclysm. No prophet or anyone close to Jesus has every suggested such a thing. The truth is that John Darby and William Miller were in big trouble. They had predicted the end of the world and when that didn’t happen they had to give the people something else as a substitute. They had collected millions of dollars that they weren’t going to give back.
