Hi all, I am wondering why people on this forum seem to prefer in general not to use their real first name as their user name. Is their some kind of fear involved? Isn't using a forum like this anonymous especially if one does not provide their last name?

I use Goldenserenity any place that lets me. It's a name I choose to use. I don't even use my given name in my email, it's goldenserenity @ xxx
It's not about being anonymous, for me anyhow.

To me it just seems more natural to address someone by their name when talking to them rather than by some made up user name that is not their real name. I was on an indigo forum a few years ago and people there were forming great friendships etc. and most of them were using their real names on the forum.

I'm on one forum where I use my real first name.

I use a different name on each forum I'm on. I
prefer to stay anonymous.

Using your real first name makes things that happen in conversation more immediate. Criticisms hit harder, and people don't always like to be identifiable by a name that holds any real power over them.

Holly is my real first name, and I use it wherever I talk about spiritual matters online because I have a particular story and perspective to share with others and I need to be identifiable as the only person having those specific experiences. (Wouldn't want anyone else claiming my material is theirs...especially considering it's quite unique.) But most people use nicknames on all the spiritual sites I've ever been on.

Ppl seem to like it that way

I've been online since the late 80s (long before the 'net was public and the development of the web). Screennames were always more common than real names. I prefer anonymity for lots of reasons, but mostly because choosing a screenname can sometimes show more about me than my real name.

It seems that many people prefer anonymity, I guess that is understandable especially if people may sometimes say things that they are embarrassed about. I just signed up for a Noahide study program yesterday with Noahide Nations website. If anyone here may be interested in signing up for the course, maybe we could discuss some of the material in a thread dedicated to that topic, so other people could benefit from it as well.
