In reading these two definitions below of psychology & spiritualism you wouldn’t at all define them in being the same or even simular in any way but I’m going to tell you why I think they are very much the same in a lot of ways. This was inspired by a discussion on TED when others & myself tried to show others on this site how spirituality relates to science remembering psychology is also a science.

Some of the replies from this discussion are in the section of this blog titled letters of reply.

From Wikipedia
Psychology is an academic and applied discipline that involves the scientific study of mental functions and behaviors.[1][2] Psychology has the immediate goal of understanding individuals and groups by both establishing general principles and researching specific cases,[3][4] and by many accounts it ultimately aims to benefit society.

Spiritualism is a dualist metaphysical belief that the world is made up of at least two fundamental substances, matter and spirit. This very broad metaphysical distinction is further developed into many and various forms by the inclusion of details about what spiritual entities exist such as a soul, the afterlife, spirits of the dead, deities and mediums; as well as details about the nature of the relationship between spirit and matter. It may also refer to the philosophy, doctrine, or religion pertaining to a spiritual aspect of existence.

What I find strange between these two definitions is in the explanation one gives about psychology being of the understanding of an individual or a group & aims to benefit society but the definition of spirituality doesn’t. If we just looked at spiritual church religion I would say that is exactly what church religion tries to do also & succeeds to a great extent in that but if we looked at spiritualism without a religious bases or doctrines to follow the emphasis on this is even greater as pure spiritualism has no bias or prejudices against any other believe system or religious doctrines. Can a psychologist have a bias or prejudices attitude if they truly want to help the recipient?

Spirituality is all about understanding oneself & helping oneself & others in many ways, you would say one is of the mind & the other of the spirit so they are completely different but no. The reason why I say no is to be able to acknowledge & know the spirit within one must first understand & become accepting of our traumas which are very much of the mind; in spirituality one must first conquer the mind which is what? Psychological!!

So is psychology & spirituality the same? As discussed on the TED site it’s a sort of paradox in it’s how you look at them or see them if they are going to seem the same or not. Psychologically they both work on the psych however the main difference spirituality goes further into the spirit but can & do psychologist do the same? In answering the can yes definably but of course the psychologist would have to be open to this, in answering do they well that would depend on the recipients/clients spiritual beliefs because once you open the mind up again your spirit is just sitting there waiting for you even if the psychologist wasn’t open minded to spirituality in the first place. So what I am saying here is the psychologist can unknowingly open oneself up to the inner self again once the traumas are gone or diminished.

Could you imagine if not just psychologist but all sciences opened up to the spiritual aspect what a difference that would make in the world, it’s hard to imagine but it is happening as it has happened before as shown below.
